i once heard that when u r the target of a spell, it affects your chest piece

so lets say an elementalist casts flare on me, do i only need dreadnought/sentinel on my chest armor to recieve the additional armor against elemental dmg thus reducing it? if someone could shed some light on the subject on how spell dmg is calculated/what armor it affects that would be great thnx

If you're going to meet the 13 strength requirement, you might as well throw sentinels on every piece of armor.

Spells that are not projectiles automatically affect your chest. Thus, deathly swarm would hit your chest armor, flare would have a chance to hit any portion of your body. Attacks and projectiles have a 3/8 chance of hitting your chest, 2/8 chance of hitting your legs, and 1/8 chance each of hitting your legs, hands and head. These odds change slightly based on the elevation of your attacker, e.g. a ranger shooting at your form above will hit your head more often than your feet.

Many people choose to put +armor on their chest and legs, and put other stuff, like +energy or lieutenant's on their other pieces.

And a minor thing - whether it's confirmed or not - projectile spells, such as Lightning Orb, seem incapable of hitting the hands.

Actually, I just went out and tested it, and non-projectile spells can effect ANY portion of your body. Apparently guildwiki lied to me a long time ago.... My mistake :P. However, the point still stands that you are more likely to get hit in your chest and legs than any other portion. Generally, your head is more likely to get hit than your feet and hands, since things are more likely to shoot you from above that below. So, stick that lieutenant's insiginia on your hands or feet if you must have it.

Brief math for lieutenant's insignia because I'm bored:

Net damage change from lieutenant's (over no insignia) = .125 * .3 *100% = 3.75% damage increase, 5% damage decrease.

Therefore, pretty much everyone should throw a lieutenant's insignia on their feet or hands.

alright thank you very much, so although they can hit any part they are more likely to hit chest/leggings so thats where ill put my +armor insignias while putting radiant on my hands n feet n head
i just mainly wanted to see if i really needed to put a +armor insignia on my hands and feet which rarely get hit rather than something more useful such as energy or health
